Alameda Street Mobility Project

The Alameda Street Mobility Project aims to close the Alameda Esplanade active transportation gap on Alameda St between Commercial and Arcadia Streets over the US-101 Freeway.

Metro has a plan to make streets and sidewalks more convenient for everyone. It includes projects in downtown LA, such as the Alameda Street Mobility Project. Currently, the neighborhoods of Little Tokyo and La Placita Olvera are physically connected by Alameda Street, and we would like to create a balanced connection to comfortably serve pedestrian and bicyclists as they cross the 101 Freeway.  

This project will study how to close the Alameda Esplanade active transportation gap between Arcadia St and Commercial St over US-101.

The project aims to:

Improve active transportation connections between Union Station and surrounding communities, including the nearby Little Tokyo/ Arts District Station.
Create an accessible, easy and safe Alameda Street connection for walking, biking and rolling for all users.
Improve multi-modal safety, movement and operations for all modes around the El Monte Busway and US-101 on and off ramps.
Improve mobility and safety of the local roadway and freeway operations.
Enhance transit accessibility and planned multimodal access.

Status

The project is currently in the early planning phase. Metro, in coordination with Caltrans, is developing a Project Study Report (PSR), which will document existing study area conditions and identify and evaluate potential alternatives for further environmental review and analysis which will help inform the rest of the project through its development. The PSR is anticipated to be completed in Late 2024/Early 2025. This project is currently not funded for design and construction.

Metro has partnered with local community-based organizations including Los Angeles Walks, Little Tokyo Community Council, and LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes to engage the community throughout the process of this PSR.
