Segments:
Segment 1: Sepulveda Bl to Central Av (Construction)
Segment 2: Central Av to I-710 (Design & Engineering)
Segment 3: I-710 to Studebaker Rd (Design & Engineering)

Metro has a plan to ease traffic and enhance safety on Interstate 105 (I-105) freeway includes the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, or carpool lane, into two Metro Expresslanes in each direction on the I-105 freeway. Metro ExpressLanes are available for use by all motorists, as a toll-free option to carpools and by paying a toll for single occupant drivers.

The I-105 ExpressLanes Project seeks to do the following:

Enhance freeway operations and safety by improving traffic flow and reducing stop and go conditions
Ease congestion by improving travel speeds on the ExpressLanes to meet the federal standard
Reduce freeway overflow traffic onto nearby city streets
Reinvest the revenue from the use of toll lanes on mobility improvements and transit projects in communities along the corridor

This Project expands the network of Metro ExpressLanes in LA County and provides direct access and connection to the I-110 Metro ExpressLanes, helping to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency and enhance highway safety.

Status

The I-105 ExpressLanes Project is under construction in Segment 1. The current phase includes work activities along the shoulder of the right side of the freeway to perform new roadway pavement construction to accommodate the new ExpressLanes and the improvements provided by the project. The following activities will be conducted along the eastbound and westbound I-105 corridor to support the new roadway pavement construction:

Landscape and tree removal
Demolition and reconstruction of several sound walls
Retaining wall construction at many locations
Bridge/undercrossing construction at seven locations
Frequent nighttime freeway lane reductions and ramp/connector closures

This current phase of construction work activities along the shoulder of the corridor in Segment 1 is anticipated to continue through the end of 2026. Overall construction for Segment 1 of the I-105 corridor is anticipated to be completed in 2028. Segments 2 and 3 are anticipated to start construction in mid-2026 and are anticipated to be completed in 2029.

Project Update Meeting

The June 12 virtual community meeting provided an update on construction progress, safety and mobility benefits, and the project’s phased timeline. Key topics included soundwall and bridge reconstruction, roadway paving, upcoming freeway configurations, and continued work through 2026. Equity Study

As part of the Equity Assessment Study for Segments 2-3 between Central Av in Los Angeles and Studebaker Rd in Norwalk, Metro is identifying potential transportation projects that will further enhance mobility, accessibility, and connectivity, improve safety, and could be funded with future net toll revenue from the I-105 ExpressLanes. Metro is seeking input from the community through a travel survey to better understand where and what modes people use to move around within the project area. The data collected from the survey will help identify where the greatest needs are and possible projects to improve mobility and safety in the communities within 3 miles of the I-105 freeway.
